In keeping with tradition, Philately Liechtenstein will issue separate stamp series on the Olympic Games. An artist from the host country, Romero Britto, was engaged to design the special stamps on the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
Born in Recife, Brazil in 1963, Britto lived an extremely modest lifestyle while growing up amongst eight brothers and sisters. However, his innate creativity allowed Britto to fill his life with images of a bigger and more beautiful world beyond his own. After exhibiting in a few galleries and private shows, Britto was encouraged to travel to the United States where Pop Art was flourishing. With an unshakable resolve and belief in his art, he spent the next few years exhibiting and attracting the attention of many.
Romero Britto also designed the “Archery” (face value: CHF 1.00) and “Judo” (face value: CHF 2.00) special stamps in his distinctive style of pop art. These are two of the 28 types of sports in which over 10,500 athletes from 204 nations will put their performance to the test during the 17 days of the competition. - Details

XXIX OLYMPICS * BEIJING 2008
The United Nations Postal Administration announced on August 8th, 2008 that it issued six commemorative “Peace for Sport” stamps this Friday to coincide with the start of the Beijing Olympics.
“The Olympic Games have always brought people together in peace to respect universal moral principles,” the agency said in a press release.
The Games centre on the slogan “One World One Dream,” encompassing the values of unity, friendship, progress, harmony, participation and dreaming.
UNPA commissioned world-renowned South American artist Romero Britto to create a half-dozen original pieces of art reflecting the theme “Sport for Peace.”
Mr. Britto uses vibrant colours and bold patterns to convey a message of hope, and his work is exhibited in over 100 galleries worldwide and is in the private collections of such people as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Oprah Winfrey and Prince Albert II of Monaco.
This new stamp collection is the second he has designed for the UN. In 1999, he created artwork for six stamps on the theme “Education – Keystone to the 21st Century.”
